two crochet trivets in the shape of white flowers

I have made this a huge number of these over the years.  The yarn I've been using has slowly discontinued some colors that are necessary for the pattern (both brown and green are now discontinued).  Everyone in my family enjoys them as much as I like making them, but it is coming to the point that almost everyone has one.  I'm making a last batch carefully with the last of my stash.

Pattern: Felted Crocodile Flower Potholder by Joyce Lewis
Completed:

Hook: N / 10mm
Size: pre-felting 14"; after felting 10"

Notes:
  • Felting - older top loader washer, hot water & a little soap. Small or medium load.
  • I've previously used towels for felting - someone recently said to try with jeans to avoid needing to trim off so much lint.
  • My newer HE washer simply ruins them, this is another reason I may no longer do this type of pattern.  My old washer in the basement won't last forever.
  • Variation - background color of green (instead of brown) and letting the leaf row be a 3rd row of petals.
five flower crochet trivets with green backgrounds

Yarn estimate by weight - I tried to weigh each skein as I made the first one below, so I could better determine using up stash. These totals should be considered slightly under for safety.
Rnds 1-4 - center - 1.4 oz
Rnds 5-6 - base row petals - 0.6 oz
Rnd 7 - base row leaves - 0.4 oz
Rnd 8-11 - background - 1.8 oz
Rnd 12 - surface crochet leaves - 0.9 oz
Rnd 13-14 - surface crochet petals - 1.5 oz

Final trivets made:
2024 summer - white with yellow center, brown background
2024 December - cherry red with brown center, brown background - sent to Caroline
2025 Feb 27 - pale purple, yellow center, brown background. Used plum for petal foundations.
2025 July - red with brown background (to Bailey) and blue with green background.

crochet barrel shaped basket in teal, lavender, darker teal.

Completed: 18 Jan 2025

For: Ellie's Baby #2

Hook: K/6.5mm

Yarn:
  • base = Red Heart in black + Herrschners Worsted in gray
  • sides = Red Heart in white + Herrschners Worsted in smoke blue, lavender, and jade
Size: ~12 inches tall and 12 inches base diameter.

Notes:
  • made this basket before, and it's basically identical in form.
  • since this is 3 strands held together, I used the 3oz Herrschners Worsted skeins, and pulled from both ends, paired with the white, to make the sides.
  • For the first 2 colors, I just stopped when I ran out.  Had a little jade left after the top.
  • I was going to use the same striped yarn in a different color for this one, BUT a porch pirate stole my yarn delivery in the 2 minutes between delivery and me walking to the door.
Additional Makes

Smaller version of the set I made last year. That one is great for outdoor work but longer than needed for inside.  Last years set

For: me

Hook: H/5mm
Yarn: Patons Classic Wool worsted

Recipe:

1. Foundation SC 30. Join to make a ring (works knuckles down)

2-6. HDC around, joining each round.

7-12. HDC in each stitch but do not join. Chain 2 (skipped in stitch count) and turn, working in rows. Makes the hole for thumb.

13. HDC around, this time joining. Ends the thumb gap.

14-17. HDC around, joining each round.

18. (DC in next 9 stitches, 2DC in next stitch) around. Makes a small width increase for arm.

19-20. DC around.

dishcloth being made diagonally with blue purple and white yarn

After about 2 years, I'm bored with the moss stitch dishcloths.

For: various gifts, myself

Hook: H/5.00mm
Yarn: Village Yarn Craft Cotton - multiple records and ways to purchase.
Size: ~8.5" square

Notes:
--prefer to make the c2c blocks with (ch3, 2dc) and a starting chain of 5. Nicer for dishcloths. (ch3, 3dc) is better for a blanket in my opinion.
--begin to decrease when the row is 14 blocks

Times made:
--2023 May - a couple green to use up scrap yarn, a 5 pack of lotus colorway (above photo).
--2023 Aug - 5 in leftover colors (now out of kitchen cotton)
--2024 made many and didn't track
--2025

dish scrubby with scalloped edges in pink purple green and white yarn
Pattern: same as all of my other scrubbies, decided from now on I should leave off the final row of SC. Doesn't add much.

For: testing this yarn - if it doesn't work I will maybe pair the rest of the skein with dishcloth cotton.

Hook: I/5.50mm
Yarn: Herrschners Suds & Scrub

Notes:
  • works up easier than the Red Heart Scrubby I've used in the past.
  • polyester yarn with clear plastic "tinsel".
  • comes in more colors and in value packs.
  • dishes test - was fine (maybe not quite as good as RHS, but not significantly) and it also came through the washing machine well.
  • Makes per skein: 6

Pattern: Springtime Coasters (no longer available online)
Designer: Doni Speigle
Time: very short project

For: various - often added to wedding or housewarming gifts.

Hook: H / 5.00mm
Yarn/Thread: Red Heart Scrubby (poly not cotton - the cotton doesn't work as well for this)
Size: 3.5" diameter

Notes: get 4 scrubbies from a skein
  • Aug 2022 - Almond (beige) set made. Wasn't sure about this color but it looks like cappuccino.
  • Sept 2022 - purple set

Made these up quickly. The foam cups on my headset are an unusual size and after a couple years they are pretty bad despite washing. Decided to go for a crochet solution. JLab Rewind brand

Hook: D-3/3.25mm
Yarn: scraps of weight 3 acrylic

Instructions:
1. Magic circle. Ch 3, 9 dc in ring, pull tight.
2. Ch 3, fpdc in same space. Dc, fpdc in each dc around.
3. Ch 3, fpdc in same space. Dc in next dc; dc, fpdc in next dc around.   (so increase with fpdc every other stitch)
4-5 Ch 3, dc around (no increase)

Tagged as "rerun" because I will remake these and am not going to make a new post every time.

Disposable mineral catchers for my warm mist humidifiers. When I clean the humidifier, I take out all the removable parts to wash and fill the heating element area with vinegar. In a few hours I check, and throw away the used hat.

Small crochet cone

Hook size - H (5mm)
Yarn - worsted kitchen cotton scraps

Rnd 1- ch 4, 9 DC in 4th ch from hook. Join (10 stitches).
Rnd 2- DC, fpdc in each around.
Rnd 3-4- DC in each around.

12 Jan 21 - made 9, have been using up all my scraps too much and not starting new dishcloths.
19 Jan 21 - made 6 more, definitely out of scraps now.
10 Mar 21 - made 22 more, from 2 rolls of 2oz Sugar n' Cream that I didn't like the color.  Closing this item for now as it is almost time to put them away for the year.

Used humidifier hat - the yarn itself is stiff with minerals and buildup touching the element has come off with the hat.

Crusted lime buildup inside crochet cone

10 June 22 - 10 more
